Described as “phenomenal” (The Times) and “devastatingly beautiful” (Gramophone Magazine), award-winning choir Tenebrae is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles, renowned for its passion and precision, and opens Celebrate Voice Festival 2024.
Under the direction of Nigel Short, Tenebrae performs at major festivals and venues across the globe, including the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Rheingau Musik Festival and Sydney Festival.
The choir has earned international acclaim for its interpretations of choral music from the Renaissance through to contemporary masterpieces. Tenebrae has enjoyed collaborations with some of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music and Britten Sinfonia.
For Celebrate Voice, Tenebrae brings its trademark passion and precision to the dramatic programme I Saw Eternity, contrasting Bach’s iconic motets with the sacred music of Sir James MacMillan.
Renowned for their technical difficulty, Bach’s motets are pillars of the choral repertoire, requiring minute attention to detail as well as a full emotional range. Like Bach, MacMillan has written much of his music for the church, and his settings of the Tenebrae Responsories paint a vivid picture of the events of Holy Week. In 2021 he composed a work for Tenebrae to perform alongside the Bach motets, and the result is a moving setting of words by Henry Vaughan, I Saw Eternity.
"For purity and precision of tone, and flawless intonation, Nigel Short’s chamber choir Tenebrae is pretty much unbeatable." The Times
“Unaccompanied choral singing comes no better than this: in blend, accuracy, precision, commitment.” The Guardian
